Once upon a time, there lived a King with his Queen. They were both very loving and caring towards their subjects. The Queen wished to have a daughter with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony.
She soon gave birth to a daughter just as she wanted with snow-white skin, blood-red lips, and ebony-black hair. She named her Snow White. Unfortunately, the Queen fell sick and passed away.
The King, wanting a mother for his daughter, married another lady. This new Queen was very beautiful. She was also very vain and proud. She had a magic mirror that could speak to her.
Every morning, she would ask the mirror, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall! Who is the fairest of all?”
The mirror always replied, “Your majesty, it is you who is the fairest of all!”
The Queen was thrilled to hear that. This continued for many years until Snow White grew up.
One day, when the Queen, as usual, asked the mirror, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall! Who is the fairest of all?”
The mirror replied, “Your majesty, you are still lovely, but Snow White is the fairest of all!”
The Queen boiled with rage. She immediately decided to kill Snow White. She asked a huntsman to take Snow White to the forest and kill her. The huntsman took Snow White to the forest.
But he did not have the heart to kill her. Instead, he said, “Please run away from here, princess. Do not come back, or the Queen will try to kill you again.”
He killed a wild boar and took out its heart. He then showed the heart to the Queen. The Queen was pleased thinking that Snow White was dead.
In the forest, Snow White was all alone and frightened. She started walking and eventually came to a cottage. She knocked on the door. No one answered. Seeing the door open, she went into the cottage.
The cottage was small and neat. She saw a table with seven small chairs. On the table, there were cakes, bread, and fruits. Hungry, she immediately started eating the food. In the corner of the room were seven tiny beds. Tired, she went to sleep on one of the beds.
The cottage was home to seven dwarfs. They worked in a nearby mine, digging gold and diamonds. When they came back home, they were shocked.
“All our food has been eaten,” exclaimed one of them.
Immediately, another Dwarf shouted, “A girl is lying on our bed.”
“She looks so pretty and innocent. Let her continue sleeping. We will talk to her in the morning,” said the third dwarf.
The next morning, the dwarfs introduced themselves to Snow White. She told them the reason she was in their cottage. The dwarfs liked Snow White, and so they allowed her to live in their cottage.
The next morning, before leaving for work, they said, “Be careful. Do not open the door for any stranger. And do not wander off alone in the forest.”
Meanwhile, in the palace, the Queen asked the mirror, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall! Who is the fairest of all?”
The mirror replied, “Your majesty, you are still lovely, but Snow White, living in the forest among the dwarfs, is the fairest of all!”
The Queen got very angry. She immediately changed herself as a gypsy selling comb and went to the cottage. She knocked on the door.
Opening the door, Snow White said, “Hello! What are you selling?”
The gypsy answered, “You have such lovely hair. I have many beautiful combs fit for your hair. Why don’t you buy one?”
Snow White said, “It does look lovely.”
The gypsy said, “Why don’t I comb your hair for you?”
Snow White turned to show her hair. What Snow White did not know was the comb was laced with poison. As soon as the gypsy stuck the comb on Snow White’s scalp, Snow White fainted. The gypsy left immediately.
When the dwarfs came back home, they were shocked to see Snow White on the floor. Then they noticed the comb. As soon as they removed the comb, Snow White opened her eyes.
Tearfully she told them, “I was so foolish. I saw a gypsy and wanted to buy her combs. She must have poisoned me.”
The dwarfs consoled her.
The next morning, the Queen asked the mirror, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall! Who is the fairest of all?”
The mirror replied, “Your majesty, you are still lovely, but Snow White is the fairest of all!”
The Queen again got very angry. She disguised herself as an old apple seller. She took an apple and dipped one half in poison. The poisoned side was bright and shiny.
She waited until the dwarfs left and cottage and knocked on the door. This time remembering the dwarfs’ warning, Snow White carefully opened the window.
“Apple for sale,” said the old woman. “Why don’t you buy this shiny and delicious looking apple?”
Snow White was very tempted but hesitated. Immediately, the old woman took a knife and cut the apple into two halves. She gave the shiny half to Snow White and kept the other half.
“Why don’t I eat this half to show you it is safe?” Saying thus, she took a bite from her half.
Seeing it was safe to eat the apple, Snow White took a bite. The minute she ate the apple, she fell down as if she were dead. The old woman immediately left; happy Snow White was dead at last.
When the dwarfs came home, they were shocked to see Snow White lifeless. They felt very sad. Because Snow White looked like she was sleeping, they decided not to bury her. So, they put Snow White in a glass casket and placed the casket in the forest. Each day, one dwarf will stay with the casket guarding it, while the other went to work.
When the Queen asked the magic mirror, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall! Who is the fairest of all?”
The mirror replied, “Your majesty, you are the fairest of all!”
The Queen was finally happy.
One day, a Prince was riding in the forest, and he came across this casket. He went near the casket to take a closer look but tripped on a stone and stumbled on the casket.
When the casket moved, the piece of apple lodged in Snow White’s throat came out, and Snow White woke up. The dwarfs rejoiced to see Snow White alive.
The next time the Queen asked the magic mirror, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall! Who is the fairest of all?”
The mirror replied, “Your majesty, Snow White is the fairest of all!”
The Queen went mad with anger. She broke the mirror and ran away, never to be heard of ever again.
Meanwhile, the Prince and Snow White fell in love with each other and got married. And they lived happily ever after.
