Once, a poor traveler was travelling in search of a livelihood. During the day, he would travel, and during the night, he would stop at one of the villages on the way for food and shelter.
One time, he stopped at a small village for the night. Since he had no money or food, he decided to request some food from the villagers. There was a group of people sitting and chatting in the village square. Seeing a stranger in their midst, the villagers stopped talking.
“Hello, I am a traveler who was passing by this village. Since it is nighttime, I chose to break my journey in this village. I am tired and hungry. May I get some food to eat?” asked the traveler to the group.
The people living in the village were stingy.
One of the men replied, “We hardly have food to feed ourselves. We cannot give it to strangers.”
“What do I do now?” thought the traveler. “There has to be a way in which I can get them to give me something.”
Aloud, the traveler said, “I understand. If one of you can let me borrow a large pot, I will make a stone soup for dinner. All I need is a large pot and some water to cook the soup. Also, please guide me to a river.”
“But how can you make soup with just a pot and water?” asked one of the villagers.
“I forgot to mention a secret ingredient that makes the most delicious soup with just water,” said the traveller taking a stone from his bag.
“It is a stone. How will that help?” asked another villager.
“Come with me to the river, and I will show you,” said the traveler.
The villagers took the traveler to a river the village. One of the villagers gave the traveler a large pot to cook the soup. The traveler started a fire using some wood on the riverbank and placed the pot on top. After filling the pot with water, he dropped a stone into it. He then stood watching the water boil.
By now, a huge crowd had formed around the traveler. The villagers in the village square had spread the word about this unique stone that could magically create a delicious soup, and everyone wanted to see it.
The traveller stirred the contents of the pot. “Yummy! The soup is coming along very well. If only I had some potatoes to make it extra special,” mused the traveler aloud, peeping into the boiling pot.
Wanting a portion of the soup, one of the villagers volunteered, “I have some potatoes. I will bring it for you.”
When the first villager brought the potatoes, the traveler added them to the soup. He then said, “Thank you so much. I will surely share this soup with you. If only I had some herbs and spices.”
“I have fresh herbs and spices in my house. Let me fetch it for you,” said a second villager eagerly who also wanted a taste of the soup. She quickly rushed home to fetch the herbs and gave them to the traveler.
This way, each time the traveler prompted for an item, a villager would offer to fetch it. Not wanting to be left out, soon the entire village brought many more vegetables, including carrots, onions, peas, mushrooms. The traveler kept adding them to the soup pot.
The addition of all the vegetables filled the pot to the brim. Soon the soup’s aroma filled the entire area, and everyone eagerly awaited to taste the special soup. After around an hour, the traveler removed the stone from the pot. First, he tasted the soup and then served it to all the villagers.
Each of the villagers agreed that they had never tasted a tastier soup.
They praised the traveler for the fantastic food. They wished that they had the magical stone as well. The people never realised that it was not the stone but all the ingredients that they each had added into the soup that made it so tasty.
After spending the night in the village, the traveler resumed his journey. The villagers remembered the delicious ‘Stone Soup’ for a long time.
Author’s Note:
‘Stone Soup’ is a famous European folk tale. There are multiple variants of this story. ‘The Clever Pilgrim’ from Switzerland and Germany, ‘Nail Soup’ from Scandinavian countries and ‘The axe soup’ from Eastern Europe are a few different versions of the same tale.
Some versions use the stone itself, while in the other versions, the stone is replaced by various inedible ingredients like an axe, nail, button, etc.
This story is an excellent example of the importance of teamwork. While each villager’s contribution was small when they combined forces, the result was considerable. While the stone did not have any magical powers, it helped bring the ingredients together.
